Panaji: The strong bilateral relationship between the US and India is expected to remain steadfast and will continue to grow stronger as the White House witnesses a transition, said Mike Hankey, the US Consul General in Mumbai. Speaking in the state capital on Friday, Hankey predicted continued progress in policy and administrative cooperation as President-elect Donald Trump assumes office in Jan. “There’s been an increasing trend of ever closer ties, trade has increased 100-fold in the last 20 years. Technology collaborations, educational partnerships have only grown, so my expectation would be that where we see continued interest on both sides... you’re going to see continued growth,” said the consul general. Hankey outlined key areas for collaboration, particularly in EV production and sustainable energy initiatives. He stressed the need to reduce dependency on China for lithium-ion batteries and diversify supply chains. “There is a supply chain limitation (for lithium-ion batteries). Most of it is reliant on once country, China. And there’s no supply chain that’s going to be resilient if it is reliant on a single point of failure,” said Hankey. During his visit, Hankey met with stakeholders, including members of the Confederation of Indian Industry and innovators from BITS-Goa. It has been a turbulent week for international traders, with the French government toppled in a vote of no confidence, plunging the euro zone’s second-largest economy into a period of deep political uncertainty. Coming on the back of a stalled German economy in a political stalemate with snap elections coming in February, it has created a very uncertain outlook for Irish exporters as they survey their sales options in their two largest European markets. The OECD last Wednesday cut its forecast for German economic growth next year. Deutsche Banks’s CEO, Christian Fleming at a banking summit in London during the week said Germany needs to adjust its business model, calling for less regulation and lower taxes on business. The political dispute which tipped President Macron‘s premier Michel Barnier over the edge, rejecting the 2025 annual budget, suggests it will now be even harder to address the country’s economic woes. With a deficit of over 6% of GDP, France already has the worst budget imbalance in the eurozone. Irish exporters were firing on all cylinders throughout 2024, with exports in September, being the highest monthly on record. Many were hoping for a stable European market, to counter the likelihood of tariffs damaging trade with the important US market. Many other exporters, however, are quietly euphoric about President Trump’s plans to cut taxes and lighten regulation and are banking on the continued rapid expansion of Irish goods exports to the market, which raced ahead by a whopping 64 % in September. Ireland is not the only country to have gained from the increases in cross-border trading in the past year. The United Nations (UNCTAD) announced last week that world trade is about to reach a record in 2024, breaking through the $3tr mark. But, there is no doubt that an outbreak of political tranquillity in Germany and France would be helpful for European and Irish businesses. The new system can summarize long email threads, prioritize urgent messages like same-day invitations and boarding passes, transcribe and summarize phone calls and voice recordings, and perform natural language searches of photos and videos to find specific moments or objects. “Apple isn’t just upgrading Siri — it’s redefining the retail experience,” Kaveh Vahdat , founder of AI marketing firm RiseOpp , told PYMNTS at the time. “Imagine AI-powered shopping where Siri becomes a real-time stylist, inventory checker and payment assistant, all wrapped in Apple’s signature privacy shield.” It was reported in May that Apple was gearing up to give Siri an AI-powered upgrade, potentially posing a challenge to Amazon ’s digital assistant , Alexa . In October 2023, it was reported that Apple was investing $1 billion per year to integrate generative AI across its product line, bringing the technology to its full range of offerings. It also found that while 52% of consumers have used voice commands to find and purchase airline tickets and accommodations on their mobile devices, only 44% completed the purchase entirely through voice prompts.: All records related to interception, including the orders and the intercepted messages, must be securely and “with extreme secrecy” destroyed by the government’s review committee, as well as the authorising entities — Union or state home secretary — and law enforcement agencies, every six months, according to the new interception rules notified by the Centre, with experts raising questions about accountability and transparency. The Telecommunications (Procedures and Safeguards for Lawful Interception of Messages) Rules, 2024 — which replace Rule 419 and 419A of the Telegraph Rules, 1951 — were brought into effect by the department of telecommunications (DoT) on Friday. The draft rules were released for public consultation on August 29. They have been issued under the Telecommunications Act, 2023, which allows the Centre to specify one or more agencies to intercept messages for five reasons — in the interest of sovereignty and integrity of India, defence and security of the state, friendly relations with foreign states, public order, and preventing incitement to the commission of any offence. “While under the earlier rule, one could still hope to get some information about the interception orders by filing RTIs related to the Review Committee, that is also now gone. It will be as if the interception never existed. Where is then the scope for oversight and accountability?” Namrata Maheshwari, senior policy counsel and encryption policy lead at Access Now, said. Under the new rules, even findings of the review committee, which is responsible for assessing the legality of the interception orders, will need to be destroyed. This review committeeis empowered to set aside non-compliant interception orders. Interception records that law enforcement agencies are required to maintain include details of the intercepted messages, person whose messages have been intercepted, officer or agency to whom the message has been disclosed, number of copies of message made, date of destruction of copies, and duration for which the interception order was in force. The composition of the review committees that must confirm the interception orders at central and state level also remains the same. For Maheshwari, this is a problem as this means the review committee is not independent from the executive. “Independent judicial oversight or parliamentary oversight over surveillance orders, as in many other regions, should be the norm,” she added. DoT and the telecommunication entity must also destroy records within two months of discontinuation of interception, as is the case now and was reiterated in the draft rules. According to the rules, the interception order must specify: the authorised agency that will intercept; and one or more of the five reasons for which interception can be ordered and will limit use of intercepted messages to these reasons only. Unless revoked earlier, the order will remain in force for a maximum of 60 days but can be renewed. No order can remain in force for more than 180 days. Interception orders cannot be passed if the information can be acquired through “other reasonable means”, the rules say. An interception order can be issued by the Union or state home secretary. In “unavoidable circumstances”, a duly authorised joint secretary-level officer may issue the order. Lower threshold for orders The notified rules lower the threshold for circumstances where officers other than the Union or state home secretary, or the joint secretary-level officer, can issue interception orders. Earlier, in “emergent cases in remote areas” or “for operational reasons” when it was not feasible for the home secretaries to issue the order, the head or second senior-most officer of an authorised law enforcement or security agency, not below the rank of inspector general of police, could issue the order. Now, an officer not below the rank of an IGP at state level, or the head or second senior-most officer of an authorised agency at the Central level, in “remote areas or for operational reasons” can issue an interception order. By removing the requirement for “emergent cases”, the threshold is lowered. What constitutes an “emergent case” depends on the interpretation of the executive, Nikhil Narendran, partner at Trilegal, said, adding: “Public emergency could be one standard.” These orders will need to be confirmed by the home secretary (union or state) within seven working days from the date of issue. If not confirmed, the interception must immediately stop, the intercepted messages cannot be used for any purpose, including as evidence in court, and copies must be destroyed within two days. “There is no judicial remedy spelt out for persons affected by the orders that were not confirmed by the home secretary,” Maheshwari said. “So it is possible that an interception takes place, is then halted, and the persons affected never find out. Notice and intimation, as feasible under different circumstances, and judicial remedy are key to any surveillance framework in a democracy.” All interception orders must be sent to the relevant review committee within seven working days of being issued or confirmed. The notified rules exclude demonstration and testing of lawful interception systems and monitoring facilities that telecom entities might be required to put in place by the government, a departure from Rule 419A. The provision to fine or suspend/revoke the licence of service providers for not maintaining secrecy and confidentiality of such orders or for unauthorised interception has been removed in the notified rules. Telecom entities will now be responsible for the actions of both their employees and their vendors that result in any unauthorised interceptions. Ambiguity over entities covered As is the case with the parent act, it is not clear whether telecommunication services, and thus telecom entities, include online communication services such as WhatsApp, Signal, FaceTime, and potentially even email services such as Gmail and Outlook. While the then communications minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, after the bill was passed in Parliament in December 2023, had said that online communication services are not included within the ambit of the Act, he did not make this statement on the floor of either house, and the definitions within the act remain ambiguous enough to allow for the regulation of such services. In case of end-to-end encrypted services such as WhatsApp and Signal, the act and the interception rules thus have significant implications. “While the minister had publicly stated that OTT services would not fall within the purview of the Act, this statement is not legally binding, and the definition of telecom services in the Act is broad enough to facilitate a range of interpretations,” Maheshwari said. This ambiguity has been a significant point of confusion, so much so that in the TRAI open house discussion on how authorisations (the regime that replaces the extant system of granting licenses to telecom entities) should work, telcos like Jio and Airtel repeatedly disagreed with associations like Broadband India Forum that represent the technology companies on whether or not services such as WhatsApp need specific authorisations from the government to operate in India. The notified rules also empower the government to exempt certain telecom entities from needing to comply with obligations related to interception. “The scope of this remains unclear. How will the government exercise this exemption? Will it be determined by size of the entity? Their technical ability? This needs to be clearly defined for predictability which is expected from every policy,” Maheshwari said. How will an interception ordered Once the home secretary (or other authorised officers) issues an interception order, it will be sent to the authorised agency (the law enforcement agency doing the interception). The authorised agency will send the order either “in writing or using other secure mode of communication” determined by the central government to the DoT or the telecom entity. Orders can be physically delivered only by officers who are at least sub-inspectors. The DoT or the telecom entity must acknowledge receipt of an interception order within 2 hours. The rules require confidentiality, “extreme secrecy”, and “utmost care and precaution” to be maintained by the law enforcement agency, the DoT, and the telecom entity while dealing with interception orders. Only authorised nodal officers in each of these entities are allowed to handle any matters related to interception. The authorised agency must appoint two nodal officers, at least at the rank of superintendent of police, to send the order to the nodal officer of the DoT (two such officers in every service area) or the telecom entity (like an Airtel or a Jio). Each telecom entity is required to notify the central government of the details of two senior employees in every service area of its operation who will act as nodal officers to implement the interception orders, a requirement that Maheshwari says might prove to be too onerous for smaller entities. The notified rules require the nodal officers in DoT and the telecom entity to submit fortnightly reports on the first and sixteenth of each month. These reports must have a list of interception orders received, reference number, date of issuance or confirmation, date and time or receipt of orders, and date and time of implementation of orders.

But be as specific as possible when doling out the assignments. "Don't let them make their own decisions!" Kobylinski said emphatically. Thanksgiving is "micromanager's heaven." For example, have someone bring ice on Thanksgiving Day because going out to buy it takes time and ice hogs freezer space. If you don't like making desserts, have someone bring one. If a guest wants to prepare a side dish, great, but decide beforehand what they will bring. Ahead of dinner, interior designer Kacie Cope likes to set out all of her serving platters with Post-it notes attached denoting what will go on them. "You'll be amazed if you have them labeled," she said. "People can help in a jiff." During the evening, Kobylinski gives people assigned jobs, such as serving drinks or taking charge of an after-dinner game. And the chef is forgiving about using premade ingredients, like gravy or cranberry jelly. "There's no right or wrong way to make any of your foods," she said. But you might want to give a homemade touch to prepared ingredients, like adding sauteed onions or celery to prepared gravy. "Everyone goes into Thanksgiving Day with a half-frozen turkey," said Kobylinski. "And you can't get the bag of giblets out because they're frozen in place." It takes one day for every 4 pounds of turkey meat to defrost in the refrigerator. (No, it is not safe to leave your frozen turkey out on the counter to thaw and breed bacteria.) So if you've got a 20-pound bird, you've got to start thawing on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. However, there are other methods. Kobylinski suggests submerging the bird and running a thin stream of cold water over it. "It doesn't have to be a lot of water." The U.S. Department of Agriculture says there are only three ways to safely thaw food: In the refrigerator, in cold water or in the microwave. To safely thaw turkey in cold water, the USDA says it takes about 30 minutes per pound. Put the turkey in a leak-proof plastic bag to prevent cross-contamination and submerge it. Change the water every 30 minutes, and cook immediately when it's thawed. If opting for your microwave, follow its instructions for thawing and cook immediately. Then, if you're running late and need to speed things up to satisfy the hungry hordes, you can cut the bird in half before cooking (skin side up). This significantly reduces cooking time, requiring about 10 minutes per pound. Kobylinski also recommends resting the turkey on vegetables in the oven to keep the bottom from getting burned. Private chef and culinary educator Emily Larsen warns that those plastic thermometers in supermarket turkeys are setting you up for failure. The USDA says that you should cook a turkey until the internal temperature is 165 degrees. Plastic thermometers don't pop out until the breast meat is at about 180 degrees, "when your turkey is completely dry," Larsen said. Plus, people forget that meat continues to cook once it's out of the oven. She recommends taking a bird out of the oven when it is at 155 degrees — she likes to use an inexpensive instant-read folding probe thermometer — and continue to monitor it. (Insert it into the thickest part of the breast, avoiding the bone.) "Ten dollars [for the thermometer] can save your Thanksgiving," she said. Some feel that buying a frozen rather than fresh bird is another no-no, since freezing leaches water out of the turkey. However, if, despite your best efforts, your turkey is lacking moisture, Kobylinski has a fix: Put warm chicken or turkey stock and clarified butter into a mister and spritz sliced turkey with it before serving. "The same with stuffing if it's too dry," she said. And you don't have to lay out 10 side dishes. In addition to opting for a simple menu, Kobylinski also recommends figuring out how long your items will take to cook and what method of cooking it requires ahead of time. Your turkey will be monopolizing your oven for four hours, so other oven foods should be limited or be easily reheated during the time that the turkey is resting. (As for resting a turkey, the chef puts her turkey on a hot plate with towels over it so "the meat rebinds itself and stabilizes for a smoother cut.") "Stovetop items should be staggered," she said, so you don't have a frying pan and three pots all going at once. As a sample menu, she suggests you might have one baked potato dish and one mashed. And for vegetables, one baked dish and one that is blanched or grilled. Interior designers advise against going too crazy with holiday-specific décor. "There's a lot that's being sold to us that we feel like we need," said Pittsburgh interior designer Amanda Bock. Do you really need a turkey-shaped vase or pilgrim figurines? "They're out for two weeks, and then you have to figure out where to store them," agreed Cope. "It takes an already busy season and makes it stressful in an unnecessary way." Cope says you can take things that are already part of your menu and use them as décor — a bowl of nuts or cranberries, or even removing the label from a cranberry sauce tin and repurposing it as a vase for flowers and fall leaves. Bock adds that dining room table décor should be kept to a minimum, since you'll need space for your food. You don't have to have "big chargers and five plates and three different glasses, plus all of your Thanksgiving food on the table," Bock said. If you do have flowers or a centerpiece in the middle of the table, keep it low, Cope advised. "That way, you can actually see the person who's across the table from you." Tableware and tablecloths might be in fall colors, so they can be repurposed throughout the season. Water glasses or wine goblets could be amber-toned, Bock suggests. Well in advance of your guests' arrival, think critically about the setup of your home. Don't be afraid to rearrange your furniture so your guests move to different areas and don't all congregate in your kitchen. "You want to make sure that there are areas where people can sit and chat, watch the parade or just hang out together," Bock said. Set up a drinks station and an hors d'oeuvres station in different parts of the house, Bock suggests. Though, she admits, "I can't do that in my house because my dogs would just gobble up the hors d'oeuvres." She suggests repurposing a kitchen nook for kid seating, or as a serving area. Kobylinski might set up a half-built puzzle in a side room. She even puts out winter jackets and boots for "the gentlemen" for the moment when she urges them to go out on the porch to smoke cigars and drink brandy so they won't be underfoot. As a finishing touch, don't neglect to set the mood by using lamps around the room instead of harsh overhead lights. Putting out tapers or tea candles establishes an intimate feeling. "That just leans into the cozy fall vibe," Cope said of low lighting. But don't use scented candles, Bock warns. Or a smelly flower arrangement. "That can overwhelm you when you're eating," Bock said. Putting on a favorite music playlist can set the mood and take away self-consciousness, especially early in the evening. The most important thing on Thanksgiving is simply for everyone to enjoy each other's company. A little advance preparation can help you, the host, stay relaxed throughout the evening so you can interact with your guests. As Bock advised, "Keep it simple for Thanksgiving." That year floats, bands, and Central Park Zoo animals were featured in the procession. At the parade's end, Santa Claus was crowned "King of the Kiddies" on Macy's balcony at the 34th Street entrance. The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) has revised trading resumption criteria for listed companies on both the SET and the Market for Alternative Investment (MAI), requiring those firms to have a higher amount of shareholders' equity and net profit over the past year. The trading resumption criteria for listed companies under a delisting review takes effect from the beginning of 2025, aligning with new listing standards, the bourse said in a statement yesterday. To qualify for trading resumption, SET-listed companies under a delisting review must have shareholders' equity of 800 million baht, up from 300 million baht now, and for companies listed on MAI the amount is doubled to 100 million baht from 50 million. In terms of net profit, delisted companies on the main bourse would be required to have a profit of 75 million baht over the past four quarters, up from 30 million now. For MAI-listed firms, they must report a net profit of 25 million baht over the period, compared with 10 million now. Listed companies under delisting review must satisfy the enhanced requirements to validate their financial soundness and performance. These amendments were approved by the Securities and Exchange Commission following market consultations, and are effective from Jan 1, 2025, the statement noted. The SET also announced the expansion of its caution sign framework to cover trusts, property funds and infrastructure funds. Under the revised framework, also taking effect on Jan 1, the funds are subject to the caution signs CB (business), CS (financial statement), CC (non-compliance), and CF (free float) when they experience risks or incidents that could impact their financial positions, business operations or liquidity status, or demonstrate non-compliance. The framework only applies to listed companies now. According to the SET, trading of funds flagged with caution signs must be made through cash balance accounts only. The funds must conduct an initial public presentation within 15 days from the sign posting date and subsequently provide quarterly progress updates to facilitate prudent and informed investment decisions among unitholders and investors. In related news, the SET released the operating results of listed companies for the first nine months of this year, with combined net profit dipping 5.4% year-on-year, while sales grew 7.8% to 13.2 trillion baht. The decrease in net profit was attributed to the performance of oil and petrochemical businesses, which suffered a decline in prices. Excluding these businesses, net profit increased by about 8%, said SET president Asadej Kongsiri. Of the 810 listed companies that submitted financial statements, 617 or 76.2% reported a profit. Listed companies had a core profit of 1.2 trillion baht and a net profit of 687 billion baht, decreases of 2.1% and 5.4% respectively. Oil and petrochemical businesses posted a net profit decline of 32.3% for the first nine months year-on-year. Excluding the energy and utilities and petrochemicals and chemicals categories, companies reported increases in sales, core profit and net profit of 11%, 13.2% and 8.4%, respectively. "The tourism industry showed marked improvement from the previous year, driving growth across tourism-related and service industries, including food and beverage, consumer products, hospitality, aviation, property rental, retail, healthcare and telecom," said Mr Asadej. Noguera discussed the need for reform in higher education due to its high cost and declining enrollment. He pointed out point out that the country faced huge educational challenges. "We have huge gaps in achievement that were exacerbated by the pandemic, particularly in math, and we also have major challenges that are related to teaching kids to read." These are schools that have been created to address the fact that a lot of kids are hungry, kids that don't have health services, kids have basic needs that schools often must step up. They (the administration will) get pushback on that." Going forward said the experts, it also would be important to monitor the administration's actions on issues like DACA and Plyler v. Doe to protect the rights of immigrant students and Prepare for potential rhetoric and attempts to undermine diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in education. Saenz pointed out that many of the basic civil rights that we all count on in education are protected by congressional legislation and it would require congressional action to eliminate or limit them. "This is a Congress that, despite Republican formal control, is quite evenly split in the House of Representatives, where it will be difficult for them to enact anything that they cannot achieve unanimous Republican support for. " While there was room for greater efficiency and making sure that federal monies were spent appropriately, Noguera said the Trump administration was coming in as though they had a political mandate, adding, "I don't think they're coming in with a clear understanding of how the system works." He warned that unpopular decisions by the incoming administration would find resistance and pushback from many quarters and fail. "When politicians come in believing they have more of a mandate than they actually do, they often make huge mistakes, and I have a feeling that this will happen with the Trump administration as well, particularly in education." The deal announced Friday is the most significant FIFA has signed with a streaming service for a major tournament. The value was not given, though international competitions in women’s soccer have struggled to draw high-value offers. “Bringing this iconic tournament to Netflix isn’t just about streaming matches,” its chief content officer Bela Bajaria said in a statement. “It’s also about celebrating the players, the culture and the passion driving the global rise of women’s sport.” Netflix dipped into live sports last month with more than 60 million households watching a heavily hyped boxing match between retired heavyweight legend Mike Tyson and social media personality Jake Paul. But if you don’t have that rule, you should take the Chiefs -2.5 . Yes, this would be a perfect spot for them to lose in a short week on the road. But the Steelers are banged up and have hit a lull since disposing of the Browns . Mike Tomlin sounded optimistic that George Pickens (who practiced in full Monday) and other injured players could return this week, so keep an eye out for that. If that happens, I’ll probably take over 43.5. I wanted to take Baltimore -5.5 but decided to play it safe. When they blow out the Texans , you can laugh at me in the comments. A melee broke out at midfield of Ohio Stadium after Michigan upset No. 2 Ohio State 13-10 on Saturday. After the Wolverines' fourth straight win in the series, players converged at the block "O" to plant its flag. The Ohio State players were in the south end zone singing their alma mater in front of the student section. When the Buckeyes saw the Wolverines' flag, they rushed toward the 50-yard line. Social media posts showed Michigan offensive lineman Raheem Anderson carrying the flag on a long pole to midfield, where the Wolverines were met by dozens of Ohio State players and fights broke out. Buckeyes defensive end Jack Sawyer was seen ripping the flag off the pole and taking the flag as he scuffled with several people trying to recover the flag. A statement from the Ohio State Police Department read: "Following the game, officers from multiple law enforcement agencies assisted in breaking up an on-field altercation. During the scuffle, multiple officers representing Ohio and Michigan deployed pepper spray. OSUPD is the lead agency for games and will continue to investigate." Michigan running back Kalel Mullings on FOX said: "For such a great game, you hate to see stuff like that after the game. It's bad for the sport, bad for college football.
