One of the most important aspects of LSU's early-season success has been the development of its freshmen. The young players figure to get significant playing time when the Tigers (10-2) play their final nonconference game against Mississippi Valley State (2-10) on Sunday in Baton Rouge, La. Redshirt freshman forward Corey Chest has had 10-plus rebounds in the last six games. True freshmen Vyctorius Miller (a team-high 17 points), Curtis Givens III (seven points, five assists, zero turnovers in 18 minutes) and Robert Miller III (four points, seven rebounds, three blocks in 18 minutes) were significant in a second-half surge during LSU's 86-70 victory against visiting New Orleans on Dec. 22. "I was really pleased with how the freshmen performed there and got us out to the 24-point lead," said LSU coach Matt McMahon, whose team begins SEC play Jan. 4 at home against Vanderbilt. The Tigers struggled to a 30-29 halftime lead before posting an 18-0 run to take command. Miller, the team's third-leading scorer (11.3 points per game) and No. 3 shooter from 3-point range (33.3 percent), is averaging 20 minutes off the bench, while Givens and Miller III are averaging about 13 apiece. LSU opened last season with a 106-60 victory against Mississippi Valley State, and the rematch figures to be similarly lopsided. The Delta Devils have home victories against a Division III opponent and an NAIA opponent. Their 10 losses have come against Division I opponents on the road by an average margin of 42.1 points. Coach George Ivory said he's trying "to change the culture" around a program that finished 1-30 last season and hasn't had a winning record since 2011-12, which also was the last time it had a winning record in the SWAC. Arthur Tate is the only Delta Devils player averaging double figures in scoring (11.0 points). Antonio Sisk led the team with 15 points in its most recent game, a 93-48 loss at Tulsa on Dec. 21. --Field Level Media“We’re aware of the civil allegations and Jay-Z’s really strong response to that,” NFL (National Football League) commissioner Roger Goodell said on Wednesday after the conclusion of the league’s winter meetings. “We know the litigation is happening now. From our standpoint, our relationship is not changing with them, including our preparations for the next Super Bowl.” A woman who previously sued musician Sean “Diddy” Combs, alleging she was raped at an awards show after-party in 2000 when she was 13 years old, amended the lawsuit on Sunday to include a new allegation that Jay-Z was also at the party and participated in the sexual assault. Jay-Z, real name Shawn Carter, said the rape allegation made against him is part of an extortion attempt. The 24-time Grammy Award winner called the allegations “idiotic” and “heinous in nature” in a statement released by Roc Nation. The NFL teamed up with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation in 2019 for events and social activism. The league and the entertainment company extended their partnership a few months ago. Kendrick Lamar will perform the Super Bowl halftime show at The Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on February 9. Roc Nation and Emmy-winning producer Jesse Collins will serve as co-executive producers of the halftime show. Beyonce, who is married to Jay-Z, will perform at halftime of the Baltimore Ravens-Houston Texans game at Christmas. “I think they’re getting incredibly comfortable not just with the Super Bowl but other events they’ve advised us on and helped us with,” Mr Goodell said. “They’ve been a big help in the social justice area to us on many occasions. They’ve been great partners.”Neal Maupay: Whenever I’m having a bad day I check Everton score and smile
PHOENIX — Former President Jimmy Carter has died at the age of 100, the Carter Center announced on Sunday . In a post on X , formerly known as Twitter, the Carter Center said the former president died in his hometown of Plains, Georgia. This comes almost two years after he entered home hospice care and just more than two years after the death of his wife of 77 years, former First Lady Rosalynn Carter. Carter was born on Oct. 1, 1924 in Plains, Georgia, and graduated from the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, in 1946. He went on to serve seven years in the Navy before going back home to Georgia. He entered politics in 1962 in Georgia and served two terms as a state senator before being elected as the state's governor in 1971. Carter held that office for four years before running for president in 1976, where he defeated incumbent Pres. Gerald Ford. He served just one term in the Oval Office, losing his bid for re-election in 1980 to Pres. Ronald Reagan. The former president went on to dedicate the rest of his life to public service, working heavily with Habitat for Humanity and The Carter Center, which he founded in 1982. The Carter Center works to advance human rights around the world. Carter leaves behind three sons, a daughter, 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Arizona politicians react to passing of former Pres. Jimmy Carter After the news of Carter's passing was announced, Arizona politicians announced their condolences. Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego released a statement, which reads: President Carter was a fighter for everyday Americans, and that commitment continued after his presidency through extraordinary humanitarian work with his wife Rosalynn. I looked up to President Carter – not only because he brokered landmark peace treaties or spearheaded major domestic energy policies – but because he overcame historic challenges and accomplished incredible feats while remaining his authentic self. I especially appreciated his commitment to elevating young women to spheres of influence, and he appointed more women as federal judges than all previous presidents combined. President Carter leaves behind a legacy of service and achievement that I and so many other leaders around the country can only hope to mirror. He will be greatly missed. Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly posted on X, "Always humble, President Carter showed us that public service isn’t limited to elected office. He leaves a legacy not just as a president, but as a great American who wore the uniform, built homes for his neighbors, and worked for human rights across the globe." Former Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake posted on X, "The world is a poorer place without this good man." Arizona Senator-elect Ruben Gallego posted on X , "A life dedicated to peace, justice, and compassion. Rest in peace, President Jimmy Carter. Sydney and I send our heartfelt condolences to the Carter family." Rep. Politics aside, a life well lived, starting from humble beginnings. May he rest in peace." Attorney General Kris Mayes posted on X, "America has lost a true servant leader. Well, I suppose it’s good to hear that Mayor Adams will be cooperating with President-elect Donald Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan ( “ ‘Cancel Me, I Don’t Care,’ ” Dec. 4). The Post shows how the mayor has had to maneuver various aspects of the migrant crisis. Still, I remember that President Biden did not meet with Adams when he visited Washington to plead for help. In spite of being ignored, however, Adams went on to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris. That was pure lock-step politics and very disappointing. I guess Adams has seen the writing on the wall and will assist with the removal of illegal immigrants. It’s only sad that he didn’t call out Washington politicians earlier. Sallyanne Ferrero Naples, Fla. Eric Adams is once again speaking with significant bluster, as he usually does when in a difficult situation. New Yorkers should listen to him but remain skeptical until his talk is matched with measurable results. The real achievements he generates often fall short of his verbal bravado. Hopefully, I am wrong this time, for the sake of New York. J. Mancuso Naples, Fla. It sounds like Eric Adams is doing a 180-turn, perhaps hoping for a future pardon from Trump. New York is a mess because Adams did nothing to stop the flow of illegal immigrants and then opted to house many of them in high-end hotels. This crisis has disrupted our health-care system and our public schools. The city is now accommodating tens of thousands of migrants, many of them unvetted. Adams must immediately cancel NYC’s sanctuary city status. J.R. Cummings Manhattan This is a classic example of too little, too late. Adams originally welcomed migrants with open arms, probably because he thought someone else was paying for it. His virtue-signaling stopped him from seeing the mess he was creating. The result? Crime, costs and more division. Now Adams wants deportations, typically changing his stance when he thinks it will make him look better. The mayor should feel ashamed for the damage he has caused. Chris Plate Waterloo President Dwight Eisenhower deported illegal immigrants by sending them to the center of Mexico, not just near our border. We should make it difficult and expensive to return here. John Phillip Jaeger Irvine, Calif. Two years ago, busloads of migrants were coming into New York, and Adams was greeting them with open arms. Now he is stating he wants to work with Tom Homan , who is slated to become Trump’s border czar, in deporting illegal-migrant criminals. Well, if that’s the case, then he needs to move forward. Talk is cheap and actions speak louder than words. Gene O’Brien Whitestone I want to thank Mayor Adams for saying he will work with Trump to deport migrant criminals. Adams has the courage to do the right thing and to keep us safe, unlike some other politicians. I will always vote for him. Reena Fettner Little Neck Mayor Adams fools no one. He allowed this city to be overrun by illegal immigrants, and our taxpayer money has been funding it. Companies and New Yorkers alike are fleeing like never before. Where has the mayor been for nearly three years through all this? Largely against deportation, calling NYC a sanctuary city. Now, for political expediency, he says he’ll work with Trump on deportations. Good luck with that, Adams, because you are politically finished. Dori Harasek Staten Island If it wasn’t for Trump’s victory, Mayor Adams wouldn’t be speaking strongly about the deportation of criminal migrants. This particular election was a blessing for New York City Democrats. I wonder if they will realize that. Ron Zajicek Cortland Want to weigh in on today’s stories? Brock Purdy and Nick Bosa are not available for the San Francisco 49ers when they enter Green Bay with designs on finding their finishing kick on Sunday afternoon. Purdy is out with a right shoulder injury and won't leave the sideline at Lambeau Field, head coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday, when he also declared Bosa out and confirmed journeyman Brandon Allen would make his 10th career start at quarterback. "Outside of here people haven't seen a lot of Brandon. But it's his second year (with the 49ers)," Shanahan said. "Obviously guys want Brock up, but guys are excited to see Brandon play." Shanahan said the 49ers are "a little surprised" Purdy experienced tightness and discomfort in his shoulder after an MRI exam on Monday that showed no long-term cause for concern. "The way it responded this week, it's really up in the air for next week," Shanahan said of Purdy's long-term prognosis. Allen's last NFL start on the road was with the Bengals at the Ravens in 2020. Allen completed 6 of 21 passes for 48 yards with two interceptions. He finished with a passer rating of 0.0 in a 38--3 loss. "It's definitely an opportunity for me to go out and play well and put our guys in a good position to win the game," Allen said Friday. "And obviously we want Brock back and healthy and all that, but for time being, it is an opportunity for me." Purdy took the practice field Thursday with the intent to participate. His shoulder tightened significantly, and the 49ers ushered him off the field to meet with trainers. Purdy beat the Packers in the NFC divisional playoffs at San Francisco in January, but Allen is familiar to Packers head coach Matt LaFleur. LaFleur was an assistant coach with the Rams during Allen's two-year run in Los Angeles. Allen broke into the NFL in 2016 with the Jaguars and is 2-7 in nine career starts. He went 1-2 with the Broncos in 2019 and 1-5 in six starts over two years with the Bengals in 2020 and ‘21. A victory against the visiting 49ers on Sunday would bolster the Packers' playoff chances, send a conference rival below .500 and avenge a bitter playoff defeat. Those seemingly rank in no particular order for the Packers (8-3), although they don't shy from living at least partially in the past ahead of a Week 12 showdown. San Francisco eliminated Green Bay 24-21 in the NFC divisional playoffs last season, scoring 10 unanswered points in the fourth quarter. "That's what you've got to sit with all offseason, is going back, watching the game, trying to see what you could have done better," Packers quarterback Jordan Love said. "What you could have done differently in that game. ... Just knowing that's the team that knocked us out, we're definitely hungry for this game." Ditto for San Francisco. The 49ers fell to 5-5 after last week's 20-17 home loss to Seattle, done in by Geno Smith's 13-yard touchdown run with 12 seconds to play. Still only a game behind NFC West-leading Arizona, the reigning conference champion 49ers are just 1-3 in division play and can ill afford to lose more ground. A visit to AFC East leader Buffalo awaits after the trip to Green Bay. While they're dealing with plenty of not-so-good news on the injury front, the 49ers do anticipate the return of other contributors. Cornerback Charvarius Ward, who missed the past two games following the death of his 1-year-old daughter, practiced Wednesday. Tight end George Kittle also is eager to play after a nagging hamstring injury sidelined him against the Seahawks. "Very excited," Kittle said. "Can't pass up playing the Packers, so no, I will be out there for sure." Allen was a three-year starter at Arkansas but has been a journeyman backup since entering the NFL in 2016 as the 201st overall pick of the Jaguars. Shanahan and LaFleur have been fierce competitors since twice working together, first as low-level assistants with the Texans in 2008, then on the so-called "dream team" staff in Washington that also included Sean McVay, Mike McDaniel and Raheem Morris; and two seasons with the Falcons (2015, 2016) where LaFleur was quarterbacks coach and Shanahan called the plays. Shanahan scored the most recent win over LaFleur in January. Green Bay has won seven of the past eight regular-season meetings between the franchises. But the familiarity and shared-brain approach to offense that has the coaches completed each other's play calls has led to some tight games. The past three at Lambeau Field were all decided by three points. Green Bay, which hosts a home game on Thanksgiving next Thursday, is starting a run of three games in 12 days. They'll play back-to-back Thursday games. Their Week 14 game is at Detroit. That might make it good news for LaFleur that surprising contributors have emerged of late. Packers wideout Christian Watson had a career-best 150 receiving yards on only four catches during last week's 20-19 road win against the Chicago Bears. His diving 60-yard reception in the fourth quarter put the Packers in position for Love's go-ahead, 1-yard scoring run with 2:59 to play. Watson entered the game with eight catches for 83 yards over his previous three contests, but LaFleur assured Watson remains a "big part" of the attack. "He's a guy who's got every measurable known to man in terms of the size, the speed, and it's not like those were easy plays he was making," LaFleur said. "He was making tough, contested catches." San Francisco will aim to generate more pressure against Love than the Bears, who sacked him just once. The 49ers collected four sacks against the Seahawks, with Bosa and Leonard Floyd contributing 1.5 apiece. Recent regular-season history between the Packers and 49ers at Lambeau Field has favored Green Bay. The Packers have won seven of their past eight home games against the 49ers and are 22-11 versus San Francisco at home all-time. Green Bay leads the series 34-28-1. --Field Level MediaNone
